About me

I’m an accomplished writer and editor, specialising in food, drink and travel.

I love nothing more than unearthing something new and sharing it with an audience through a well-crafted story. I’ve flown like a bird in a Helsinki wind tunnel, been held over a waterfall in Iceland, had my soul read in the Lake District, tasted sheep whey vodka in Tasmania, made marzipan figurines in Tallinn, filo pies in Amman, and dined in some of the world’s best restaurants. I’m also a Great Taste Awards judge (and have even judged cocktail competitions, if you ask really nicely).

I’m based in London, UK (though travel frequently, see above), and my writing has been published in The Times, Sunday Times Travel magazine, Telegraph Travel, Condé Nast Traveller, The Independent, Lonely Planet (where I worked in-house as an editor 2011–2019 and still write/edit for them), The i paper, Olive magazine, Great British Chefs, British Airways’ The Club magazine, Etihad’s Atlas magazine, Culture Trip, and Hot Dinners.

I’m also a very experienced structural editor, copyeditor, proofreader and TV script editor (Neighbours’ script department 1992–1997, it’s true). I can help you deliver a faultless, professional message and make you look even better than you already are.

Editing work

I’m an experienced editor and my work has helped many individuals and companies across a broad range of industries.

I can dazzle you with my editorial qualifications (BA in Professional Writing, Grad Dip in Editing & Publishing, Institute of Professional Editors accreditation), but the reality is editors tend to work behind the scenes making writers and clients look good. The aim is to improve your text, whether that’s restructuring, fixing typos and grammar, or removing/refining ambiguities so the message is clearly and professionally communicated to the reader. I’ve edited annual reports and brochures, recipe books, travel books, finance journals, novels, television scripts, blog posts. I will always preserve the meaning of your text without undue interference and pride myself on wonderful writer-editor relationships, as you’ll see in my Testimonials.

My videos

I love making videos when I travel because I want you to share the experience with me.

Just back from: The Westfjords, Iceland

I filmed this in the Westfjords of Iceland in May 2017 then it was edited with my piece-to-camera in Lonely Planet’s London office to accompany my online article about the region.

Testimonials

What my clients say about me.

‘I’ve worked with Karyn on a few pieces for The Independent. She has great ideas, files on time and is always ready to make edits as and when needed. Would happily work with again.’

Cathy Adams

Former Head of Travel, The Independent (now Senior Content Editor, Times Travel)

‘It was a pleasure to work with Karyn on Lonely Planet Food’s France: From the Source. Her attention to detail was astounding and her careful and respectful editing maintained my voice and writing style throughout. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her for any editing or writing work.’

Carolyn Boyd

Author, Lonely Planet’s From the Source: France

‘The ultimate pro. Karyn's copy is informed and accurate and demonstrates her clear ability to communicate the important parts of a story. She manages to find angles that make subjects enjoyable to uncover, while her wit and enthusiasm always shine through. If that's not already enough?! It's on time, print ready and on brief.’

Olivier Ward

Editor, Spirits Beacon

‘As both an editor and writer, Karyn is a wordsmith extraordinaire. I was lucky to work with her on Lonely Planet’s From the Source: Mexico. She was an incredibly observant, yet extremely courteous, editor. Thanks to her attentive suggestions and tweaks she added a 'zing' to the text. Plus it’s wonderful to work closely with someone who has a zest for creativity. And a genuine love of good writing, food and travel.’

Kate Armstrong

Author, Lonely Planet’s From the Source: Mexico

‘Karyn was a joy to work with when she edited my cookbook. Professional, unflappable, detailed and with a superb eye for the things that are often missed. Karyn also delivered an enormous amount of work in a short period of time. Highly recommended and I hope that we will work together in the future.’

NIAMH SHIELDS

Author of Bacon: The Cookbook, Food writer eatlikeagirl.com

'Karyn is an absolute whizz with words, and genuinely passionate about copy-writing and proofreading. My experience working with Karyn started with her stand-out editorial commissions for British Travel Journal and more recently we have worked across a number of contract magazine projects together. Karyn's contributions and attention to detail when proofreading have proved invaluable, and she is an absolute delight to work with.'

Jessica Way

Editor-in-Chief, British Travel Journal

‘We've used Karyn a lot recently on Hot Dinners, commissioning her to write news stories and features for us. Not only is she great at meeting the brief and getting copy in on (and often ahead of) time, but she often goes the extra mile to get some additional detail that other freelancers we've used haven't done. We'd happily recommend her work.’

Catherine & Gavin Hanly

Editors & Co-Founders, Hot Dinners
